Green Line on iPhone Screen? What It Means and How to Fix It

You pick up your iPhone and there it is — a bright green line running vertically down one side of the screen. It won’t go away. It’s there in every app, on the lock screen, everywhere. You didn’t drop your phone, you didn’t get it wet, it just appeared.

You’re not alone. The green line issue has affected iPhone models from the iPhone X through the iPhone 14 and beyond. It’s one of the most recognized iPhone display defects, and we see it at our Pacific Beach shop regularly.

What causes the green line

The green line is a hardware failure in the OLED display panel. OLED screens are made up of millions of tiny organic light-emitting diodes arranged in a grid. When a column of these diodes fails or the connection between the display driver and a column of pixels is damaged, the result is a persistent vertical line — usually green, sometimes white or pink.

Common triggers include a minor drop (even without visible damage), pressure on the screen (sitting on the phone, tight pocket), temperature extremes, or sometimes nothing at all — the display connection simply fails over time due to flex cable fatigue.

The important thing to understand: this is not a software problem. No restart, update, or factory reset will fix a green line. It’s a physical failure inside the display assembly.

Will Apple fix it for free?

It depends on your situation.

If your iPhone is under the standard one-year warranty or covered by AppleCare+, Apple will likely replace the display at no cost. They’ve acknowledged this as a known hardware issue on certain models.

If your warranty has expired, Apple will charge their standard out-of-warranty screen replacement fee, which varies by model.

If you have an older iPhone that’s out of warranty, an independent repair shop is typically 30-50% less expensive than Apple for the same repair.

How to fix it

Since the green line is a hardware issue, the only fix is a screen replacement. The good news is this is one of the most straightforward repairs. The old display assembly comes out, a new one goes in, and the green line is gone. At our shop, this takes 20-30 minutes for most models.

Before getting it repaired, back up your iPhone just in case. Your data won’t be affected by a screen replacement, but backing up is always smart before any repair.

Can you live with the green line?

Technically yes — the phone still works. But the line will not go away on its own, and in many cases it gets worse over time. What starts as a thin green line can expand to multiple lines or larger display artifacts. We recommend getting it repaired sooner rather than later.

No. The green line is a hardware failure in the OLED display panel. No amount of restarting, updating, or waiting will fix it. The only solution is a screen replacement.

How much does it cost to fix the green line on an iPhone?

The cost is the same as a standard screen replacement for your model. At Indiana Phones, pricing varies by model — call (619) 577-3065 for an exact quote. We’re typically 30-50% less than Apple’s out-of-warranty pricing.

What causes the green line on iPhone?

The green line is caused by a failure in the OLED display’s pixel column or the flex cable connecting the display driver. It can be triggered by drops, pressure, temperature changes, or spontaneous flex cable fatigue.
