Ghost Touch on iPhone: Why It Happens and the Real Fix

Your iPhone is doing things on its own. Opening apps. Typing random letters. Swiping between screens. Making calls to people in your contacts. It looks like a ghost is using your phone — and that’s exactly what repair techs call it: ghost touch.

Ghost touch is more than annoying — it can be a security risk if your phone is opening apps or sending messages without your input. Here’s what causes it and how to actually fix it.

What causes ghost touch

Ghost touch happens when the digitizer — the touch-sensing layer under your glass — registers touches that aren’t happening. The three most common causes are:

A damaged or defective digitizer. If your phone was dropped, even without visible cracks, the digitizer can sustain micro-fractures that cause false touch signals. This is the most common cause and requires a screen replacement.

A faulty screen protector. Air bubbles, debris trapped underneath, or a protector that’s slightly too small can create pressure points that the digitizer interprets as touches. This is the easiest fix — just remove the screen protector.

A swelling battery. As lithium-ion batteries age and fail, they can physically swell and push against the screen from inside the phone. This pressure causes the digitizer to register phantom touches. Signs of a swelling battery include the screen lifting slightly from the frame, a bulge on the back of the phone, or the phone rocking when placed on a flat surface. This is both a ghost touch issue and a safety concern — swelling batteries can be dangerous and should be replaced immediately.

How to fix ghost touch

Start with the simple fixes and escalate:

Remove your screen protector completely. Clean the screen with a microfiber cloth. If ghost touch stops, the protector was the problem. Get a new one — preferably a higher quality brand.

Force restart your iPhone (volume up, volume down, hold side button until Apple logo). Software glitches can occasionally cause erratic touch behavior.

Check for a swelling battery. Look at your phone from the side — is the screen lifting away from the frame at any point? Place it face-down on a flat surface — does it rock? If yes, stop using the phone and get the battery replaced immediately. A swelling battery is a fire risk.

If none of the above helps, the digitizer is damaged and you need a screen replacement. There’s no software fix for hardware-level ghost touch.

Don’t ignore ghost touch

Beyond the annoyance factor, ghost touch can accidentally call people, send messages, delete files, change settings, or even make purchases from your phone. We’ve seen customers come in after their phone sent embarrassing texts or placed online orders without their knowledge. Get it fixed promptly.

FAQ

Why is my iPhone touching itself?

Ghost touch is caused by a damaged digitizer (the touch sensor under the glass), a faulty screen protector creating false pressure points, or a swelling battery pushing on the screen from inside. Remove your screen protector first — if the problem persists, you likely need a screen replacement.

Is ghost touch dangerous?

Ghost touch itself isn’t physically dangerous, but a swelling battery (one common cause) is a fire risk and should be addressed immediately. Ghost touch can also cause your phone to send messages, make calls, or make purchases without your knowledge.

How much does it cost to fix ghost touch on iPhone?

If the cause is a faulty screen protector, the fix is free (just remove it). If the digitizer is damaged, it requires a screen replacement — pricing varies by model. Call Indiana Phones at (619) 577-3065 for a free diagnostic and quote.
