iPhone Not Ringing? Here’s How to Fix It

iPhone Not Ringing? Here’s How to Fix It

You look at your iPhone and discover three missed calls and seven text notifications. You did not hear a single ring. You did not feel a single vibration. This is one of the most common issues customers bring to us at Indiana Phones, and the fix is almost always a software setting rather than a broken speaker. Here is how to work through it.

Check the silent switch (the physical one on the side)

On iPhones through the iPhone 14, there is a small physical switch on the upper-left side above the volume buttons. If that switch is flipped toward the back of the phone, showing an orange stripe, your iPhone is in silent mode. This is the number one cause of iPhones not ringing. Flip it toward the screen. On iPhone 15 and newer, Apple replaced the physical switch with an Action Button — check Settings > Sounds & Haptics and the Action Button configuration to make sure silent mode is not active.

Check Do Not Disturb and Focus modes

Focus modes (formerly Do Not Disturb) silence most notifications, including calls. Swipe down from the top-right corner on Face ID iPhones, or up from the bottom on older iPhones, to open Control Center. Look for any active Focus mode and tap it off. Also check Settings > Focus to see if you have a scheduled Focus mode that automatically turns on at certain times (like a Sleep or Work schedule you forgot about).

Check ringer volume

The side volume buttons only control media volume by default, not ringer volume. Go to Settings > Sounds & Haptics and look at the Ringtone and Alerts slider. If it is all the way down, your phone is effectively muted for calls. Drag it up. While you are there, toggle ‘Change with Buttons’ on if you want the side volume buttons to also control ringer volume (most people find this convenient).

Check notification settings per app

If only certain apps are not ringing (like Messages but not phone calls, or WhatsApp but not iMessage), go to Settings > Notifications, find the app, and make sure Allow Notifications is on and Sounds are enabled. Individual apps can be muted independently and it is easy to do accidentally.

Check Bluetooth connections

If your iPhone is paired to Bluetooth headphones, a car, or a speaker you forgot about, your calls and notifications may be routing to that device instead of ringing on the phone speaker. Open Control Center and check the audio indicator. Turn Bluetooth off temporarily to test. This is a very common issue with AirPods that automatically connect when they are nearby.

When it is a speaker hardware issue

If you have checked every setting and your phone still does not make sound for calls (but you can see missed call notifications appearing), the issue is likely the earpiece or loudspeaker hardware. You can test this by playing music or a YouTube video. If no sound comes out of the bottom speaker grills, the loudspeaker has failed. If no sound comes from the earpiece during calls (hold the phone to your ear), the earpiece has failed. Both are same-day repairs at Indiana Phones.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my iPhone not ringing for incoming calls?

The most common causes are the silent switch being flipped, Do Not Disturb or a Focus mode being active, ringer volume turned down in Settings > Sounds & Haptics, or the phone being connected to Bluetooth headphones that are routing the audio. Hardware speaker failure is less common but does happen.

Why does my iPhone ring on some calls but not others?

Check if the affected contacts have their own custom ringtone set to None, and check if you have ‘Silence Unknown Callers’ enabled in Settings > Phone (that one silences calls from anyone not in your contacts).

How do I test if my iPhone speaker is broken?

Play a song or YouTube video. If no sound comes from the bottom speakers, your loudspeaker has failed. For the earpiece, make a call and listen at the top of the phone — if you hear nothing during the call, the earpiece has failed. Both are fixable.

Can you fix an iPhone speaker?

Yes. Speaker replacement is a routine same-day repair at Indiana Phones. Earpiece and loudspeaker are separate components and each can be replaced individually. Call (619) 577-3065 for current pricing.
