Here is how to work through it systematically.
First, check the obvious: silent switch and volume
The silent switch on the upper-left side of your iPhone (or the Action Button on iPhone 15 and newer) is the single most common cause of an iPhone with no sound. Flip it so no orange stripe is showing. Then press the volume-up button a few times while audio is trying to play. Ringer volume and media volume are two different settings in iOS — media plays through whatever source is currently active (phone speaker, Bluetooth, or headphones), and if your phone thinks it is connected to something else, the volume buttons will not affect the phone speaker.
Check Bluetooth — this catches half of the cases
If your iPhone has connected to a forgotten Bluetooth device (your car, a speaker at work, AirPods in a drawer), all audio is routing to that device instead of the iPhone speaker. Open Control Center (swipe down from the top-right corner on Face ID iPhones, or up from the bottom on older models), long-press the audio tile, and check which output is selected. Switch it back to iPhone Speaker. Or just toggle Bluetooth off entirely in Settings > Bluetooth to force all audio through the phone speaker.
Restart your iPhone
A standard restart clears any temporary software state that might be preventing audio from playing. Hold the side button + either volume button until the power off slider appears, slide to power off, wait ten seconds, then hold the side button again to turn it back on. Test audio as soon as the phone finishes booting.
Check individual app sound settings
Some apps have their own mute buttons inside the app that are separate from iOS. Instagram and TikTok videos play muted by default. YouTube videos can be muted with a single tap on the speaker icon. Games and meditation apps often have separate sound effect and music sliders. If only one app is silent but everything else works, the app itself is muted.
Clean the speaker grills carefully
Years of pocket lint, dust, and beach sand can clog the speaker grill to the point where sound cannot physically escape. Turn the phone off. Use a soft, dry toothbrush or a small brush designed for electronics to gently sweep across the speaker grills at the bottom of the phone. Do not use anything wet or sharp. You might be surprised how much debris comes out. After cleaning, test audio again.
Hardware speaker failure signs
If audio plays through Bluetooth headphones just fine but nothing comes out of the phone speaker, the loudspeaker has failed. If people cannot hear you on calls (but the earpiece works when they call you), the bottom microphone has failed. If you cannot hear them on calls, the earpiece speaker has failed. Each of these is a separate component and each can be replaced independently.
Earpiece vs. loudspeaker — they are different parts
The earpiece is the small slit at the top of the screen that you hold to your ear during calls. The loudspeaker is the bottom of the phone and handles speakerphone, media, and ringtones.
