MacBook Won’t Turn On? Here’s What to Do

MacBook Won’t Turn On? Here’s What to Do

You open your MacBook and press the power button. Nothing. No fan spin, no chime, no backlit keyboard, no Apple logo. A dead MacBook is terrifying — there is irreplaceable work, photos, and projects inside. Before you panic or start shopping for a replacement, work through these troubleshooting steps in order. In most cases the MacBook is not actually dead, and at Indiana Phones we have recovered countless MacBooks that customers were convinced were gone for good.

Step one: check the power connection

Sounds obvious but it fixes about a third of ‘dead MacBook’ cases. Make sure the charger is plugged in at both ends — into the wall outlet and into the MacBook. Check the small LED on MagSafe chargers (on models that have them). Amber means charging, green means full. If there is no light at all, the charger is not making contact or is dead. Try a different outlet to rule out the wall power. If you have another MagSafe or USB-C charger of the right wattage, try it as a test.

Step two: try a different charger

MacBook chargers fail more often than people realize, especially MagSafe 1 and 2 generation chargers where the cable wore through at the connector. USB-C chargers are more durable but not immune. Borrow a friend’s MacBook charger or buy a cheap Apple-compatible one to test. If the MacBook wakes up with a different charger, the original charger is dead and the MacBook itself is fine.

Step three: SMC reset (Intel Macs only)

If you have an Intel-based MacBook, the System Management Controller can get stuck in a state where it refuses to power the machine on. SMC reset procedure varies by model. On MacBooks with T2 chip: power off, hold Control + Option + Shift (on the right side of the keyboard) for 7 seconds, then add the power button and hold all four for another 7 seconds, release everything and press power normally. On older Intel MacBooks with non-removable battery: Shift + Control + Option (left side) + power button held for 10 seconds, release, press power normally. Apple Silicon MacBooks (M1, M2, M3, M4) do NOT have SMC — a regular shutdown and power-on is equivalent.

Step four: force restart on Apple Silicon

On M1 through M4 MacBooks, hold the power button for 10 full seconds. This forces a hardware shutdown. Release, wait 10 seconds, then press the power button briefly (not held) to boot normally. This is the Apple Silicon equivalent of force restart and it fixes a lot of apparent dead-MacBook situations.

Step five: NVRAM/PRAM reset (Intel Macs)

NVRAM stores settings like startup disk selection, display resolution, and speaker volume. Corruption can prevent boot. On Intel Macs: immediately after pressing the power button, hold Option + Command + P + R for about 20 seconds (until you hear the second startup chime or see the Apple logo appear and disappear twice). Apple Silicon Macs manage NVRAM automatically and do not have this procedure.

Step six: check for signs of life

Press the power button and watch/listen very carefully. Does the keyboard backlight flicker? Do the fans spin even briefly? Does the power LED on MagSafe change color? Is there a faint chime? ANY of these signs mean the MacBook is getting power and is attempting to boot — the problem is likely a display issue, firmware issue, or a software-level boot hang, not a total dead state. That narrows the repair path significantly.

Step seven: boot to Recovery Mode

If the MacBook might be booting but the display is not working, try booting to Recovery Mode. Intel Macs: hold Command + R during boot. Apple Silicon: hold power button during boot until Options appears. If Recovery Mode boots and the screen works there, your problem is in the regular OS boot process and a reinstall will likely fix it.

Hardware causes of a dead MacBook

If all the above fails, the issue is hardware. Most common: completely failed battery (especially on MacBooks 4+ years old), damaged charging IC or power delivery chip on the logic board, liquid damage that shorted critical components, or a failed display backlight circuit (MacBook is alive but you cannot see). Each has a different repair path. At Indiana Phones we diagnose MacBooks for free and give honest recommendations on repair cost vs replacement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my MacBook not turning on?

Most common causes: dead charger, dead battery, SMC stuck state on Intel Macs, software boot hang, liquid damage, or a failed power delivery component on the logic board. Work through the troubleshooting steps in order to narrow down the cause.

How do I force restart a MacBook that won’t turn on?

Hold the power button for 10 full seconds to force a hardware shutdown, then release, wait 10 seconds, and press power briefly. This works on all Apple Silicon MacBooks and most Intel Macs.

Can a dead MacBook be fixed?

In most cases, yes. Battery replacement, charger replacement, logic board repair, and water damage cleanup can all revive ‘dead’ MacBooks. At Indiana Phones we diagnose for free and tell you honestly whether repair makes sense.

How do I do an SMC reset on a MacBook?

On Intel MacBooks with T2: hold Control+Option+Shift (right side) for 7 seconds, add power button, hold all four for another 7 seconds. On older Intel MacBooks: Shift+Control+Option (left) + power button held for 10 seconds. Apple Silicon MacBooks do not have SMC.
