Touch ID Not Working on iPhone? How to Fix It
Your iPhone Touch ID used to work flawlessly. Now it fails half the time. Or it stopped working entirely, forcing you to type your passcode for everything. Touch ID is one of those features you do not think about until it breaks — then every unlock is a hassle. Here is how to diagnose and fix Touch ID problems, from the Indiana Phones repair bench in Pacific Beach.
Clean your finger and the Home button
Touch ID reads the capacitive patterns on your fingertip. Dirt, dust, sweat, lotion, sunscreen, and moisture can all interfere with the reading. Wipe your finger on a clean cloth. Wipe the Home button with a soft dry cloth. Dry your hands if they are wet. Try Touch ID again. This is actually one of the most common fixes — a lot of ‘broken’ Touch IDs are just dirty.
Re-enroll your fingerprints
Over time, the fingerprint pattern stored in Touch ID’s Secure Enclave can drift from your actual fingerprint (skin changes, small cuts, callus changes). Go to Settings > Touch ID & Passcode, enter your passcode, delete your existing fingerprints, and enroll them fresh. Enroll each finger multiple times at different angles during the setup process — Touch ID is smart enough to build a composite pattern from multiple scans.
Add multiple scans of the same finger
Here is a pro tip: you can enroll the same finger multiple times in Touch ID, and it treats each enrollment as a separate ‘fingerprint’ but they all unlock the phone. Enrolling your primary finger 2-3 times (once normally, once with the finger rotated slightly, once with slight pressure variation) dramatically improves Touch ID reliability. Most users do not know this.
Restart your iPhone
A simple restart clears any software state that might be affecting the Secure Enclave’s Touch ID communication. Hold side button + volume to power off, wait 10 seconds, power back on. Test Touch ID after reboot.
Update iOS
Apple has released Touch ID reliability improvements in past iOS updates. Settings > General > Software Update. Install any pending updates and test.
Check for Home button damage
The Home button is exposed to more wear and tear than any other part of the phone. On iPhones with physical Home buttons (iPhone 6s through iPhone 8, iPhone SE 1st and 2nd gen, iPhone SE 3rd gen), the button can physically degrade — the sensor underneath wears down, the ring around the button collects debris, or a crack in the button surface disrupts the capacitive reading. Look carefully at the Home button. Any visible damage means hardware repair is likely needed.
Why Touch ID cannot be transferred to a new screen
Here is important context: Touch ID is cryptographically paired to your specific iPhone’s logic board at the factory. If your iPhone screen (with attached Home button) has been replaced by a third-party shop with the wrong procedure, Touch ID will not work anymore — and cannot be fixed short of replacing the logic board. This is Apple’s deliberate security measure. When Indiana Phones replaces an iPhone screen, we carefully transfer your original Home button to the new screen to preserve Touch ID functionality.
Water damage and Touch ID
Water in the Home button assembly or its flex cable will kill Touch ID. If your phone has been wet recently and Touch ID suddenly stopped working, water damage is the likely cause. We can sometimes restore function after professional drying and cleaning.
When Home button replacement is needed
If software fixes do not work and the Home button is physically damaged, it can be replaced at Indiana Phones. Important note: on iPhones with Touch ID, replacing the Home button with a third-party button will result in Touch ID not working (because of the cryptographic pairing). We can install a replacement button so the Home button still functions as a button — it just will not do Touch ID. For a working Touch ID you need the original Home button from your original iPhone to be reinstalled. Call (619) 577-3065 with your situation and we will give you honest options.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my iPhone Touch ID not working?
Most common causes: dirty finger or Home button, outdated fingerprint enrollment (needs to be re-enrolled), software glitch (needs restart), iOS bug, or physical damage to the Home button. Clean and re-enroll first before assuming hardware.
How do I reset Touch ID on iPhone?
Settings > Touch ID & Passcode > enter passcode > delete existing fingerprints > ‘Add a Fingerprint’ to enroll fresh. Enroll each finger 2-3 times at slightly different angles for best reliability.
Can you replace an iPhone Home button with Touch ID?
The button itself can be physically replaced, but Touch ID is cryptographically paired to the original iPhone’s logic board and cannot be restored with a third-party button. The button will work as a button but not as a fingerprint sensor unless the original is reinstalled.
Does a cracked screen break Touch ID?
Not directly. But if the screen has been replaced by a shop that did not transfer the original Home button correctly, Touch ID will stop working because of Apple’s security pairing. Always confirm with the repair shop that they preserve Touch ID during screen replacement.
