How to Back Up Your iPhone Before a Repair
Before any iPhone repair — especially screen, battery, or charging port work — you should back up your data. Most repairs do not touch your data at all, but there is always a small risk that something unexpected happens during disassembly (a flex cable gets damaged, a component shifts, the battery needs to be disconnected and something fails on power-up). A current backup takes about 15 minutes and guarantees that even in a worst-case scenario, you lose nothing. Here is the complete guide to backing up your iPhone before a repair at Indiana Phones or anywhere else.
Option 1: iCloud backup (the easiest way)
If you have iCloud storage space and a Wi-Fi connection, this is the simplest option. Go to Settings > tap your name at the top > iCloud > iCloud Backup. Make sure Back Up This iPhone is toggled on. Tap Back Up Now. The backup runs over Wi-Fi and typically takes 5-30 minutes depending on how much data you have. Do not unplug or lock the phone during the backup. When it completes, the date and time of the last backup will update. You are done.
iCloud storage limitations
Apple gives every Apple ID 5GB of free iCloud storage, which is not enough for most iPhone backups. You probably need to upgrade to iCloud+ (50GB for $0.99/month, 200GB for $2.99/month, or 2TB for $9.99/month) to have room for a full backup. This is a worthwhile investment even just for the backup safety alone. You can cancel the plan after the repair if you want, though most people keep it because it is genuinely useful for photo storage and family sharing.
Option 2: Back up to a Mac (for free, no size limit)
If you have a Mac running macOS Catalina or newer, you can back up directly to the Mac’s hard drive for free without any iCloud storage required. Connect your iPhone to the Mac via USB cable. Open Finder. Your iPhone appears in the sidebar under Locations. Click it. Under ‘Backups’ click ‘Back up all of the data on your iPhone to this Mac’ > ‘Encrypt local backup’ (recommended for passwords and Health data) > set a password > click Back Up Now. The backup takes 5-45 minutes depending on how much data you have. It is stored on your Mac so it is not limited by iCloud space.
Option 3: Back up to a Windows PC with iTunes
On Windows, download iTunes from the Microsoft Store or Apple’s website. Connect your iPhone via USB. Open iTunes. Click the small iPhone icon near the top-left. In the Summary tab, select ‘This computer’ under Backups, check ‘Encrypt local backup’, set a password, click ‘Back Up Now’. Same as Mac — backup is stored on your PC and there is no size limit.
What a backup includes
A full iPhone backup includes: all your photos and videos (unless they are already in iCloud Photos, in which case they do not need to be in the backup); app data, settings, and progress; messages and iMessage history; call history; voicemails; device settings and Wi-Fi passwords; Health and activity data (only if you encrypted the backup); Apple Watch data; home screen arrangement and preferences. Apps themselves are not in the backup — they are redownloaded from the App Store during restore.
What a backup does NOT include
A few things are NOT in a standard backup: content purchased from iTunes that is not already downloaded; content synced from your computer (music, videos, podcasts); data already stored in iCloud (if you use iCloud Photos or Messages in iCloud, those are in iCloud itself rather than the backup); Apple Mail data (email is server-stored); Face ID / Touch ID data (for security reasons); Apple Pay information (for security).
Verifying your backup worked
On iCloud: Settings > your name > iCloud > iCloud Backup > look at ‘Last Successful Backup’ date/time. Should be within the last hour. On Mac/PC: in Finder/iTunes, the backup time should appear in the Summary section. Make sure it shows today’s date. Having a bad backup and not realizing it is worse than having no backup at all.
Take the extra step before any repair
At Indiana Phones, we have never damaged a customer’s data during a routine screen or battery repair — but we always tell customers to back up anyway, because the peace of mind is worth 15 minutes of time. Use whichever method works for your setup, verify it completed, and then bring your iPhone in with confidence. Call (619) 577-3065 or visit 1630 Grand Ave in Pacific Beach.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I back up my iPhone before a repair?
The easiest way is iCloud backup: Settings > your name > iCloud > iCloud Backup > Back Up Now. Make sure you have enough iCloud storage (may need to upgrade to iCloud+). Alternatively, back up to a Mac or Windows PC via Finder or iTunes.
Is iCloud backup automatic?
Yes, if enabled. iCloud backs up automatically every day when the iPhone is charging, locked, and connected to Wi-Fi. Check Settings > your name > iCloud > iCloud Backup to verify it is enabled and to see the last backup date.
What does iPhone backup include?
Photos, videos (unless in iCloud Photos), app data, messages, settings, Wi-Fi passwords, Health data (encrypted only), call history, and home screen layout. Apps themselves are not in the backup — they redownload from the App Store during restore.
Do I need to back up my iPhone before a screen repair?
Technically no — most screen repairs do not touch your data. But backing up takes 15 minutes and eliminates any risk of data loss from unexpected issues during repair. Every reputable repair shop, including Indiana Phones, recommends it.
