There is a designated swimming area, staffed by a lifeguard during the summer months. You can also take part in beach volleyball tournaments on the sandy flats at the south end of the beach. At night, the low tide exposes the sand bars. As you can imagine, the water can be a bit rough, but it is a fun experience.

There is a kelp forest in the bay, and the people there catch sea urchins and finfish. They also harvest the brown algae kelp for use in manufacturing alginates.

There is also an 18-hole executive course at Mission Bay Golf Course. This is the only golf course in San Diego that has nighttime lighting. Tiger Woods won his Junior World Championship there. Also, the golf course has a practice facility.

Lastly, there is a boat launch and boat rentals. Fiesta Island is located across from the beach and provides more activities. Visitors can take a ride on the water, or rent a bike. While you’re on Fiesta Island, you can check out the tall buildings in downtown San Diego. Besides the park, there are horseback rides, hiking trails, and an off-leash dog park. More fun things to do in San Diego.
