iPhone Overheating? Causes & How to Cool It Down - Indiana Phones San Diego

Why Is My iPhone Overheating? Causes and Fixes

Why Is My iPhone Overheating? Causes and Fixes

Your iPhone is uncomfortably warm to the touch. Maybe you are seeing the dreaded temperature warning screen that forces the phone to cool down before you can use it again. Maybe it just feels like it could fry an egg while you are trying to navigate with Apple Maps. iPhone overheating is common, especially in San Diego summers, but there is a big difference between normal warmth and a phone that is genuinely in trouble. Here is how to tell which one you are dealing with and what to do about it.

Normal warmth vs. dangerous overheating

iPhones generate heat during intensive tasks. GPS navigation, gaming, video calling, fast charging, and restoring from a backup all legitimately warm the phone up. A warm-feeling iPhone during any of these activities is normal. What is NOT normal is a phone that gets hot during light use (checking texts, browsing the web, taking a single photo), a phone that gets hot while sitting idle in your pocket, or a phone that gets hot during regular charging overnight. Those are signs something is wrong.

The most common causes of abnormal iPhone overheating

In our repair shop we see the same handful of culprits over and over: direct sunlight (leaving your phone on the dashboard of your car in a Pacific Beach parking lot is a guaranteed meltdown), a rogue app running in the background and consuming 100 percent of the CPU, charging while playing a demanding game, an old or swollen battery that is near the end of its life, an outdated iOS version with a known thermal bug, and physical obstruction (using the phone inside a thick waterproof case while also charging it).

How to cool your iPhone down safely

First, stop whatever you are doing and close all apps (swipe up from the bottom and swipe each app card up). Second, get the phone out of direct sunlight and out of its case. Third, turn off Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and cellular data in Settings or just enable Airplane Mode for a few minutes. Fourth, if the battery is very low, plug it in to a wall outlet but not to a wireless charger (wireless charging generates significant extra heat). Fifth, do NOT put the phone in the freezer or fridge — the rapid temperature change causes condensation to form inside the phone and that can cause permanent damage. Just let it cool at room temperature.

When overheating means battery replacement

Lithium-ion batteries degrade over time, and degraded batteries generate more heat during normal use because their internal resistance has increased. If your iPhone is two or more years old and it is suddenly running hot without any change in your usage, go to Settings, Battery, Battery Health. If Maximum Capacity is below 80 percent, or if you see the warning that your battery’s ability to deliver peak performance has degraded, a new battery will likely fix the heat problem. Battery replacement is one of the most common same-day services at Indiana Phones.

Signs of a swollen battery (this is dangerous)

A swollen iPhone battery is a fire hazard and should be replaced immediately. Signs to watch for: the back glass or screen is lifting or bulging outward; the phone rocks on a flat table when it used to lie flat; the screen has gaps at the edges; you can see or feel the phone is not its original shape. Stop using a swollen-battery phone, do not charge it, and bring it to us (or any reputable repair shop) the same day. Swollen batteries do not get better on their own and can ignite.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it normal for an iPhone to get hot?

Some warmth during GPS navigation, gaming, video calls, or fast charging is normal. What is not normal is an iPhone that gets hot during light use, sits warm in your pocket idle, or heats up every time you charge it. Those are signs of a hardware or software problem.

Can overheating damage an iPhone?

Yes. Sustained high temperatures damage the battery and can damage the logic board. Apple’s own thermal protection kicks in at around 95°F internal temperature and forces the phone to cool down. Repeated overheating shortens battery lifespan significantly.

How do I cool my iPhone down quickly?

Get it out of direct sunlight, remove the case, turn off unused radios with Airplane Mode, and close all apps. Do not put it in a freezer or fridge — condensation from rapid cooling can damage internal components.

Does a new battery fix iPhone overheating?

If the overheating is caused by a degraded battery (common in iPhones 2+ years old), yes, a battery replacement typically resolves it. Check your battery health in Settings > Battery. Below 80% Maximum Capacity is a strong sign the battery is the cause.
