Your iPhone screen is on, you can see everything, but tapping does absolutely nothing. Or maybe it works in some spots but not others. Maybe it randomly stops responding for a few seconds then comes back. This is one of the most common iPhone problems we repair at Indiana Phones in Pacific Beach — and about half the time, you can fix it yourself before coming to see us.
Here are six fixes, in the order you should try them.
1. Force restart your iPhone
This solves the problem roughly 25% of the time. A force restart is different from a normal restart — it interrupts all processes including frozen touch input handlers.
For iPhone 8 and newer (including all Face ID models): quickly press volume up, quickly press volume down, then press and hold the side button until the Apple logo appears. Don’t let go until you see the logo — it takes about 10-15 seconds.
If your screen started acting up out of nowhere and was fine before, this will likely fix it.
2. Check 3D Touch and Touch Accommodations settings
Apple has accessibility features that intentionally modify how your screen responds to touch. If these get accidentally enabled, your screen can feel broken when it’s actually just reconfigured.
If your screen is partially working, navigate to Settings, then Accessibility, then Touch. Check three things: make sure Touch Accommodations is OFF (this adds a delay before touch is registered), check that Haptic Touch sensitivity is set to a comfortable level, and on older models make sure 3D Touch isn’t set to “Firm” which requires hard pressing.
3. Remove your case and screen protector
A damaged screen protector can cause dead zones. A case that’s too tight or warped can press on the screen edges and create unresponsive strips along the sides. Remove both completely, clean the screen with a lint-free cloth, and test bare.
We see this particular issue multiple times a week — someone thinks their screen is broken, we pop off the case, and everything works perfectly.
4. Update your iOS
Apple periodically releases updates that fix touch-related bugs. Some iOS versions have had known touch responsiveness issues. Go to Settings, then General, then Software Update. If an update is available, install it.
If your screen is completely unresponsive and you can’t navigate to Settings, connect your iPhone to a Mac or PC and update through Finder (Mac) or iTunes (Windows).
5. Free up storage space
iPhones with less than 1GB of free storage can exhibit sluggish or unresponsive touch behavior. The operating system needs working space for its processes, and when storage is critically full, touch input processing gets delayed or dropped entirely.
If your screen is partially working, go to Settings, then General, then iPhone Storage. Delete old videos, clear Safari cache, and offload unused apps. You need at least 2-3GB free for smooth operation.
6. Check for invisible screen damage
You dropped your phone. The glass looks fine. But the touch screen doesn’t work properly anymore. This is more common than visible cracks — the digitizer (the touch-sensing layer sandwiched under the glass) can crack independently of the outer glass. There’s no DIY fix for this — it requires a professional screen replacement.
Signs of digitizer damage: touch works in some areas but not others in a consistent pattern, the screen has faint lines or discoloration under the glass, or touch stopped working immediately after a drop even though the glass is intact.

FAQ
Why is my iPhone touch screen suddenly not working?
Sudden touch failure is usually caused by a software freeze (fixed by force restart), an iOS bug (fixed by updating), or invisible digitizer damage from a recent drop. Try a force restart first — it’s the most common fix.
How do I use my iPhone if the touch screen doesn’t work at all?
Connect a USB mouse or trackpad via a Lightning or USB-C adapter. You can also use Voice Control (if previously enabled) to navigate hands-free. For data backup, connect to a computer and use Finder or iTunes.
Can water damage cause iPhone touch screen problems?
Yes. Moisture under the screen can cause unresponsive zones, ghost touches, and intermittent touch failure. If your iPhone got wet recently, let it dry completely for 24 hours before assuming the screen needs replacement.
