Phone Screen Flickering? Causes and How to Fix It

Your phone screen is flashing, flickering, or rapidly changing brightness on its own. Maybe it’s a subtle shimmer. Maybe it’s dramatic full-screen flashing that makes the phone hard to use. Either way, it’s distracting and often a sign of something that needs attention.

Screen flickering can be a software issue or a hardware issue. Here’s how to tell the difference and what to do about it.

Software causes (fixable at home)

Auto-brightness glitching. Your phone uses a light sensor to adjust screen brightness automatically. Sometimes this feature malfunctions and rapidly adjusts brightness, causing a flickering effect. Fix: go to Settings and turn off Auto-Brightness (on iPhone: Settings, Accessibility, Display & Text Size, scroll to Auto-Brightness). If the flickering stops, you found the cause. You can leave auto-brightness off and manage brightness manually.

Low power mode affecting display. On some phones, Low Power Mode reduces the display refresh rate or brightness stepping, which can cause visible flickering. Turn off Low Power Mode and see if it stops.

App-specific flickering. If the screen only flickers in certain apps, the app itself is the problem — not your screen. Update the app, clear its cache, or reinstall it. If flickering happens in every app and on the home screen, it’s system-level.

Software bug. A force restart (iPhone: volume up, volume down, hold side button; Android: hold power + volume down) can clear bugs causing flickering. If the flickering started after a software update, check for a newer update that patches the issue.

Hardware causes (need professional repair)

Loose display connection. The cable connecting the display to the logic board can come partially loose from a drop or impact. This causes intermittent flickering that gets worse over time. A repair tech can reseat the connection — or if the cable is damaged, replace the display.

Damaged display panel. If the OLED or LCD panel itself is failing, you’ll see flickering that’s consistent and doesn’t respond to any software fixes. On OLED screens, this can appear as random color flashes or sections of the screen flickering independently. This requires a screen replacement.

Water damage. Moisture on the display connector pins or corrosion on the logic board can cause intermittent display issues including flickering. If your phone got wet at any point, this is a strong possibility.

How to tell if it’s software or hardware

Boot your phone into Safe Mode (Android) or DFU mode (iPhone). If the flickering continues in Safe Mode when all third-party software is disabled, the issue is almost certainly hardware. If it stops in Safe Mode, a recently installed app or software update is the cause.

Another test: take a screenshot when the flickering is happening. If the screenshot looks normal (no flickering captured), the issue is hardware — the display panel itself is flickering, but the software rendering is fine. If the screenshot captures the flickering, it’s a software/GPU issue.

FAQ

Why is my phone screen flickering?

The most common causes are auto-brightness malfunctioning (software), a loose display cable (hardware), or a failing display panel (hardware). Try turning off auto-brightness and doing a force restart first. If flickering continues, it’s likely a hardware issue that needs professional repair.

Can a flickering screen damage my eyes?

Prolonged exposure to rapid screen flickering can cause eye strain, headaches, and fatigue. While it won’t cause permanent eye damage, it’s uncomfortable enough that most people want it fixed quickly.

How much does it cost to fix a flickering phone screen?

If the issue is a loose display cable, it can often be fixed for a minimal labor charge. If the display panel is failing, it requires a full screen replacement — pricing varies by model. Call Indiana Phones at (619) 577-3065 for a free diagnostic.
